Laura, Curator of Paintings

We are responsible for the care, display and interpretation of one of the world's greatest collections of Old Master paintings. Among so many highlights, I would single out a self-portrait by Rubens, over 40 paintings by Canaletto and one of only 35 known works by Vermeer.

We research and plan exhibitions, and support Royal Collection Trust's extensive programme of loans worldwide. We also respond to enquiries, give tours of the royal residences and are constantly updating 'The Royal Collection Online' to make these great paintings ever more accessible to the public.

The paintings we look after are not only shown in exhibitions, but are also displayed at royal residences and former royal residences throughout the UK, from Hampton Court and Osborne House in the south to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in the north.

One of the most exciting aspects of our job is finding solutions to the unique challenges that arise from managing such a dynamic collection. If a painting in the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace is being lent by The Queen to an exhibition, we must find a suitable replacement from the collection. Often we will completely re-hang a room, perhaps one of the State Apartments at Windsor, so visitors can enjoy a newly curated display.

A combination of creativity and thoroughness, a passion for Art History and the ability to work well as part of a team are all important requirements for roles within the Paintings team.
