This rock crystal chalice is likely to have come from the Closet of Caroline of Ansbach, where Walpole listed several 'rock crystal vases'. Queen Charlotte (1744–1818) appears to have adopted Caroline's collection, transferring it from Kensington Palace to Buckingham House after 1763.

A group of works of art from Buckingham House later passed to the Prince Regent, at Carlton House. Among this group were objects that might be traced back to Caroline of Ansbach's Wunderkammer, including a stuffed hummingbird, branches of red and white coral, a distinctive vase with chimera handles and unicorn feet, two agate goblets and a group of daggers.
